Vigilante & Judge 29"

WTB is a brand with a passion for all thing cycling. Since 1982 they have been developing mountain biking equipment which is fit for purpose and highly reliable. I’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of their MTB tyres to test and after a few weeks of putting them through their paces on the trails, here are my thoughts.

First up is the Judge, described by WTB as their rowdiest rear tyre and even on first glance I would have to agree. This is a big and mean looking tyre with massive lugs which scream grip giving potential. Perfect for loose, sketchy descents these tyres have been developed for the Enduro and Gravity DH scene so it’s unfortunate I couldn’t get them to a Bike Park to give them a proper thrashing. Nevertheless, its was clear from the first ride on local DH trails that these tyres offer maximum grip, they felt planted on the berms and there was little slipping even on wet roots so the confidence they inspired was great.

WTB recommend pairing this rear wheel ripper with their Vigilante tyre for the perfect Enduro/Gravity setup. The Vigilante is such an aggressive looking tyre with massive lugs to stick you to the trail and a design which enables epic lean angles while maintaining high levels of grip. Having never ridden such chunky, aggressive tyres I didn’t know what to expect and wondered if they would feel cumbersome to turn but on the contrary, they roll well and seem to find grip in whatever angle.

One of the biggest benefits of running this set up has to be the braking performance; the grip on both of these tyres means they dig into the terrain and bring you to halt almost instantly, exactly what’s needed on those steep and loose descents!

If I was to pick out a downside to these tyres it would be the resistance they bring to climbing, not surprising at all given their grippy, aggressive designs and in some ways unfair to call this a disadvantage as they are designed for Gravity riding but it is worth noting if you are considering these tyres for Enduro and plan to be doing a fair few big climbs.

Overall this set up does exactly what it advertises, it provides unwavering grip and inspires confidence on loose, wet and steep terrain. If you haven’t ridden WTB tyres yet, give them a go, you may just find your new ideal set up.

Tritec and Slash Guard:

All of WTB’s new mountain tires feature TriTec Compound, which utilizes three rubber compounds to provide different levels of traction, support and durability based on their placement within the tread. The entire tread pattern is supported by a base of high durometer rubber, which also transitions halfway into the height of the knobs and allows for the use of softer knob compounds without the tire folding due to cornering forces. The top of the center knobs consist of a medium durometer compound to provide traction and durability without sacrificing rolling efficiency, while the outer knobs feature the softest compound to deliver maximum grip and slow rebound. All TCS Light versions of the new WTB tires feature Slash Guard technology, which incorporates a protective nylon insert spanning the entire sidewall to provide extra protection without the weight of a dual ply casing.

Features:

Square-lugged knobs deliver unwavering traction, yet with added height to ensure they dig even deeper into loose, unpredictable terrain.
Updated siping arrangement places emphasis on cornering forces, while the larger knobs don’t discriminate against shamelessly forceful cornering or reckless braking.
Increased circumferential spacing allows the tread to remain clear in sloppy conditions, while still keeping the casing protected from spiteful rocks.
Optimised around i29 rims.

Usage: Trail / Enduro / Gravity
Conditions: Dirt / Loose / Rocky / Wet
